Four days before Christmas Day in 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up in the sky above Scotland. The bombers had planned that the wreckage to have come down over the Atlantic but a delay to the flight resulted in it falling over the south of Scotland and particularly on Lockerbie. All 259 passengers and crew aboard died as did eleven people on the ground. In January 2001, one man – Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted in a special convened Scottish court in the Netherlands. Eight years later he was released from a Scottish prison having been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The decision to release him was made by Kenny MacAskill, Scottish Justice Secretary. Mr Macaskill’s recent book details the background to the bombing and the decision to release MacAskill and continuing controversies.
